Wine lovers are in for a special treat when they explore Southern Oregon’s burgeoning wine region. Over 60 wineries with complex micro-climates create a wonderful diversity of varietals. And Jacksonville is heart and soul of the entire region.
Jacksonville is the official Gateway to the Applegate Valley Wine Trail. Touring the 20 wineries in the breathtaking Applegate Valley is convenient due to their close proximity to each other and to Jacksonville. They are all within about 25 miles. The Applegate Valley climate is an alternative to Oregon’s cool-climate viticulture and is conducive to Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux red varietals.
You can take just a couple of hours or easily fill several days touring the vineyards and wineries of the Applegate Valley. These wineries are small and unspoiled so you can enjoy relaxed tasting rooms where you will often find yourself talking to the wine maker in person.
Right in town you can experience local and regional wines all within walking distance. South Stage Cellars is a vineyard-based Tasting Room and Wine Garden that features South Stage Cellars estate label as well as many other wines made exclusively from their Quail Run Vineyards' fruit by other Oregon winemakers. Quady North is committed to small lot, minimally handled wines that reflect the diverse cool-climate vineyards of the State of Jefferson and are expressions of the climate, soils and people who farm them. The Umpqua Valley Tasting Room is devoted to wines from River’s Edge Winery and Bradley’s Vineyards in Elkton, Oregon.
And a mile south takes you to DANCIN Vineyards, a collection of three distinctively unique micro-vineyards of Pinot noir and Chardonnay located above the forested foothills. Great patio areas and tasting room, and great food, too! A mile east you will find Caprice Vineyards featuring cabernets, chardonnay and viognier. Weekends in the summer feature local musical entertainment and you might also enjoy the Alpaca’s or products from their wool in the gift shop.
Some favorites (in no particular order) are Valley View, Red Lilly (beautiful site and great wines, especially the tempranillo), Troon Vineyards(check out their Chardonnay & a bocce court!), Schmidt Family Vineyards (Craftsman style tasting room and beautiful gardens, love their Riesling and Viognier), Wooldridge Creek (stunning view and lovely zinfandel), and Cowhorn Vineyards and Gardens (biodynamic and certified organic). Also, check out the twice a year Uncorked events to get a behind the scenes look and taste of what is up and coming!
We are also centrally located for all 68 wineries in the Southern Oregon region. This region includes the Applegate Valley, Illinois Valley, Rogue Valley and Umpqua Valley. A couple of good source of information for the entire region Southern Oregon Wine Scene and Southern Oregon Winery Association.
For an immersion event you should plan on attending Oregon Wine Experience, formerly known as Southern Oregon’s World of Wine Festival in August, right here in Jacksonville. Throughout the week yu can participate in sensory classes and winery dinners. End things with the Grand Tasting where you can sample wines and early releases from over 40 regional wineries.
