Recall the magical experience of riding on elaborate Merry-Go-Round horses and you may not realize that many were hand-carved. The Woodcarving Place, 280 East D Street in Jacksonville, is a place where that kind of magic is still made.
Jerry Greer and Sandy Flowers have opened a gallery and shop focused on the art of wood carving. Is is a gathering place for carvers and other artists to come together, practice their craft, and enjoy the company of others who share the same interest. The woodshop can also do cut outs, special cuts and gluing.
For hands-on experience, they offer a nice selection of classes - from basic wood carving and water color to the more sophisticated carousel animal class. Classes are also offered students over the summer. Every Thursday KID FUN (Ages 6-10) is offered in the morning and YOUNG ARTISTS (Age 11 up) in the afternoon.
In addition to the shop there is a wood carving history exhibit with interesting information and little known facts, as well as woodcarving related merchandise for sale from local artisans.
The shop and gallery are located at 255 East D Street. Phone is 541-899-5571
